As I mentioned in my last post there has been a large shoal/shoals of bait fish in the bay which I think are Sprats. These fish have been moving around in the bay and last week were coralled in the harbour. However as it was a neap tide they remained in fairly deep water. This weekend saw the return of spring tides and this provide some entertainment when a largish shoal got trapped in the large pool betwen the harbour and Porthminster. The gulls made the most of this as you can see from the photos.
I gave the birds a good scan and found they were 90% Herring gulls and, unfortunately, I couldn't find anything rarer than a med gull although the Little gull that has been hanging around was reported. Still, quite a spectacle though.

Looks exciting Rich. Possible Glaucous x hybrid in photo 3??
ReplyDeleteI hadn't noticed mate, which one?
ReplyDeleteThird photo, bird at one o'clock? Probably just the light makes the dark markings on wings look washed out/restricted but the bill looks very 1st w Glaucous-like.
ReplyDeletewicked man, is that with your new camera too, good work boss. J
ReplyDeleteCheers Jakey.
ReplyDeleteI just blew it right up Andy and yes I see what you mean from the bill. The light was very strong and from the right so I think it's just that making the right wing look translucent. However the left wing has dark tips to the two outermost primaries. Who knows?
