Greenland bound

The bird highlights of the last week or so has been the number of Greenland/Iceland Wheatears moving through the county.

This bird was at Buttermilk hill.
At Clodgy A few Willow warblers moved quickly through whilst a good number of Whitethroats are lingering and Sedge warblers seem to be trickling in slowly. The local Swallows all seem to have arrived back safely while Stonechats are still non-existant. The first Common swift of the year passed over Trelawny road on the 19th.
A Grasshopper warbler put in a brief appearance on the 17th and a female Merlin passed through very quickly West with a small group of Swallows on the evening of the 20th. The same evening a group of 5 Balearic shearwaters also went West.
On the breeding birds front all the common species appear to be holding territories in good numbers and there now seems to be two singing male reed buntings in the area whilst the sighting of a female Bullfinch today and another calling on the 18th gives reason to believe there may be a breeding pair in the area.
